Quit while you’re ahead. Really, it’s an awful field. Just torture. Awful. You write and write, and you have to throw almost all of it away because it’s not any good. I would say just stop now. You don’t want to do this to yourself. That’s my advice to you.
Philip Roth gives life advice to an aspiring writer. To which I say: bull$hit! As long as we continue to perpetuate the toxic mythology that writing and creative work are “torture,” we’ll continue raising generations of creators who succumb to the “tortured genius” myth. Instead, take it from Ray Bradbury, who lived to 91 believing wholeheartedly in writing with joy, then listen to some sage advice on how to find your purpose and do what you love.
